Poetry Bliss Monday

I can’t remember when I first read Emily Dickinson’s poem I’m Nobody! Who are you? Probably 10 or so. Even at that young age, though, I still “got it,” the humor, the poem.

I’m Nobody! Who are you?

Are you – Nobody – too?

Then there’s a pair of us!

Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!

How public – like a Frog –

To tell one’s name – the livelong June –

To an admiring Bog!

That was a seminal moment when I understood the power of poetry: it can put into words what can’t otherwise be put into words.

I include poetry in my upcoming memoir, Bliss Road, because on any journey, there are some moments/concepts/feelings you just can’t write about any other way.

Do you have a favorite poem?
