Autistic Pride Day

Updated: 3 days ago

When I was a kid, there was no Pride Month, much less a day dedicated to gay members of the autistic community. Autism itself was not that well-known, nor diagnosed often, especially lower-needs autism (previously known as Asperger syndrome).

It really pains me to think about kids I might have gone to school with who struggled to hide their differences. Kids are so wonderful. All they want is to be happy. Maybe that’s why I really appreciate these designated “awareness” days and months that encourage people to be proud of who they are.

What’s something you hid, but wish you could have explained to your classmates about yourself?

Me: that my mind goes in a thousand different directions at once, which is why it’s sometimes hard to concentrate.

And a little history, according to Wikipedia:

"Autistic Pride Day was first celebrated in 2005 by Aspies For Freedom (AFF), who selected 18 June because it was the birthday of the youngest member of the group at that time."
