Black History Month: Jazz Greats

When I was a junior in college for broadcast journalism, I was hungry for all of the experience I could get, so I volunteered for a shift as a DJ for the school-owned, professionally run radio station at the University of Missouri - Columbia. The director made sure all students took a first shift for the classical music show, primarily because he had trouble filling that spot.
I did that, and yes, butchered the pronunciation of countless classical composers. But then I got to pick my next volunteer slot, and I chose jazz. Ever since, I’ve been a huge jazz fan, a genre of music that touches my soul. Maybe because jazz inherently demands boldness and intimacy in equal measure. To mess around, experiment and play: what I do naturally when writing, but had trouble expressing publicly.
The older I’ve gotten, the greater my appreciation for these jazz greats.
What’s your favorite kind of music?
