Book Review: "Floating in the Middle

FLOATING IN THE MIDDLE sings about nature like no other!

Set on the gorgeous, but rough California coast north of San Francisco, seven friends unite for a weekend in a remote beach house. Rather than just fun and games, however, Tam, the protagonist, has come to find out if, after long separation from her husband, Jamie, he’s willing to try again. Because she is.

Tension continues to build via the feisty dynamics of people who’ve known one another for a long time, and from nature itself. The beach house is losing ground to a cliff that’s getting ever closer due to the relentless wind, storms and ocean waves that crash below. And again when the friends forage for, and then cook, food from the a forest full of color and birdsong, I felt like I was inhaling the rich scents and tasting the fresh garlic, oil and mushrooms.

Lurking within this beautiful, rugged landscape is an odd, mysterious local man who dresses in black and calls himself The Raven. On the one hand, he offers yogic advice about appreciating nature, yet also drops dark warnings about what might happen if humans don’t pay closer attention to the ecosystems of our natural world.

If you’ve ever spent a weekend with friends that turned into an embrace of the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, you’ll be able to relate. And if you’ve never been to the dramatic Sonoma coast, this book will make you feel like you have!
