Extreme Weather: THE WIND THIEF

Writer's picture: marthaengbermarthaengber

This is a photo of a “supercell” from the Wikipedia page about a particularly rare and deadly “rotating thunderstorm” characterized by a rotating updraft, or upward air current.

This is the kind of Armageddon phenomenon I learned about when researching the hundreds of different winds that swirl around our world, for my novel, THE WIND THIEF, about a young woman who believes she can talk to the wind.

If you’re fascinated by the power of wind and weather, especially as a visual metaphor for the kind of turmoil we can feel inside, this is the book for you!

Here are some other interesting facts about wind from SIMPLE WEATHER EXPERIMENTS WITH EVERYDAY MATERIALS by Muriel Mandell:

Wind Records:
1) fastest surface wind speed recorded: Mt. Washington, NH, 231 mph
2) windiest place: Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica, 200 mph
3) fastest tornado: Wichita Falls, Texas, 286 mph
4) worst hurricane: Bangladesh, 1970
